Do you write well? Were school or college essays too limiting? Do you want to write with complete freedom and be paid for it? Then start your career by writing for the Underground, a new magazine published online and also to be distributed annually in England. We are looking for original and imaginative stories and articles of about 1000 to 2500 words. Dullness and predictability are not required; vision, artistic courage and fluency will get you published.
We are also interested in poetry, black-and-white graphic stories, designs for the front page, cartoon strips and one-off cartoons, book, film and game reviews...
...and if you have something intelligent, imaginative and not mentioned above - send it in.
All submissions will be considered if they show originality, imagination and are well-written or drawn.
How to submit your work to us
The simplest way to send text is to use our Submissions page, which is here.
Image and text files should be emailed to submissions@undermagz.co.uk
If using the postal service, send your writing or artwork by Royal Mail to:
Peter Jennings, The Editor, Underground Magazine, Lavington Park, Petworth, GU28 0NB
Don't forget to put enough postage on - big envelopes cost more.
Important information about submissions
If you use a word-processor and you email your work to us, please save your file as 'Text Only' or a 'Rich Text File' (RTF), unless the lay-out is essential to the effect of the piece. This makes sure that we can read your file. You can send us black and white artwork as a scanned image in any of the common formats - preferably jpeg or gif. With any image, make sure you have scanned it at high density - i.e. a lot of dpi (dots per inch) - at least 600dpi. This makes a bigger file but fine detail will not be lost if we print your work.
Paste text files into the body of your email or send them, or image files, as attachments. Your submission should be accompanied by a short piece about yourself, written in the third person, for publication. Mention whatever you feel is relevant about yourself as a writer or artist, perhaps who or what has influenced and motivated you, or other writing you have done or are planning. If possible, you should also include a passport-style photograph.
If you use Royal Mail and you want your article or artwork returned, you should enclose a suitably-sized envelope, stamped and addressed to yourself.
Payment, terms and conditions
Underground Magazine will pay from £20 to £50 per item selected for publication in the annual collection. Payment and prizes will also be available on an occasional basis throughout the year. A suitable stamped and self-addressed envelope must be included if the manuscript or artwork is to be returned. Submissions accepted for publication may be cut or otherwise adapted, at the discretion of the Editor. The Editor's decision on acceptance and payment is final and no correspondence will be entered into on matters relating to editorial decisions.
The Underground Magazine is an independent publication sponsored by Seaford College.
